South Midland Point to Point

Dante's Storm to blow away his rivals

Following last week-end's postponement of the South Midland Area Club Meeting at Tweseldown another close eye on the weather is going to be required ahead of this weekend's pointing fixtures. With melting snow and heavy rain in most areas of the country we are keeping our fingers crossed the South Midland Area Club meeting at Tweseldown can eventually take place. The ground at Tweseldown does dry quickly and every attempt is being made to get the course fit for racing. The downside is that although the snow has now past we are still seeing minus temperatures overnight, hopefully the temperatures will start to rise and we can get back to the pointing action.

With 178 entries received on a well-contested looking 8 race card it will be a great shame if this meeting cannot go ahead. The highlight of the card is the Mens Open race that could see the impressive Dunthrop winner Kingscliff take on another Cheltenham Foxhunter entry in BurntoakBoy. These two horses are also faced by a very useful youngster in Dante's Storm. I really like the look of him and it will be really interesting to see how he fares with this much stronger opposition. The impressive Dunthrop maiden winner William Somers should record another victory in the Restricted race. The inform David Mansell/ Julie Houldey team should also gain further success with Top Benefit in the Intermediate Race. Angela Rucker seems to hold the key to the Ladies Open Race with several decent horses entered from the stable. Honest Endeavour seems to hold the strongest form along with Petit Lord but with Blue Business winning last weekend he is also another with strong credentials and whichever horse turns out on the day will take plenty of beating. The two Open Maiden Races both look very difficult but the first division looks the stronger and could suit the front running Lushes Run with Phillip York on board. Port Talbot should also go well in this race and could record an overdue first success. The second division looks very open but Dakota Boy who ran well to finish 2nd behind My Mystery Man at Barbury in January could go one better and open his account here. Sleep Bal who likes to front run should also hold a very good chance of winning the opening club Members conditions race, he would have most to fear from the race fit Sudden Arrival and the consistent Reel Dancer. The final race on the card looks very tricky but if Earl of Buckingham can produce a similar performance when finishing second behind Eskimo Jack at Dunthrop a fortnight ago he should run very well.
