Irilut and Chicuelo the Stars of the show for Opening Day
Tweseldown kicks off the opening day of the 2007-2008 point-to-point season. They have 82 entries on a 6 race card with the first race to commence at 12.00pm. The course is in great condition and the going should be near perfect with a good covering of grass over all of the course. Amongst the entries are the Robert Waley-Cohen trained Irilut partnered in the saddle by son Sam. Sam had a tremendous partership with the horse last season and looks a good thing to take the Mens open race. They could also register a first day double with Something Small looking to have a good chance in the Connolly's Red Mills Intermediate Race. These two horses are sure to be fully wound up, fit and raring to go. Chicuelo ridden by Maxine Filby also looks to have an outstanding chance of taking the Ladies Open Race. Chicuelo showed some impressive form last season and will be very hard to beat. The main danger looks to be the Alan Hill trained Bering Gifts who had some decent form last season, but did not seem at all in love with the game when acting doggish and being a hard ride for James Tudor at a couple of the late season meetings. If Bering Gifts can return fresh and keep his mind on the job in hand then he could push Chicuelo all the way, but i am afraid that is a very big if.
The meeting kicks off with the Veterans and Novice Riders event and there is not much to choose between Winsley and Royal Tir. I am going to go for a bit of value and go for Winsley to come out on top on this occasion. Winsley is fairly consistent and although the only win he gained last season was at the course in a similar Novice Riders Race. The race could be set up to suit his style of racing but would not be a confident pick. The Tweseldown Racing Club Members Conditions Race seems to be a very open affair, possibly Airmark could return to form to win a very weak and not very inspiring race. The finale could be set up for the Alan Hill trained Topol. Topol was not seen out last season but I am sure Alan Hill has taken his time to nurse this horse back to the track. If he is able to show some of his form from 2006 then he should be good enough to break his maiden tag.
As the actual declared runners for each race are not known until the day, we will make a selection of which horse we believe will have a good chance of winning the race. A second selection will also be given in case this horse does not run. The best two bets of the day will be tagged in the form of a Nap being the best bet, and a Next Best being the second best bet of the day.
Selections :
Race 1 Winsley (Royal Tir)
Race 2 Irilut (N.B.) (Unleash)
Race 3 Chicuelo (Nap) (Bering Gifts)
Race 4 Airmark (Coral Island)
Race 5 Something Small (Lile Na Casca)
Race 6 Topol (Millview)
At this meeting Cars will be charged at £10.00 to include the driver with any additional Adults costing £5.00 per person. There will also be some stalls and various other catering facilities.
